Orange Label Series

2004

The labels in this series are from a collection formed in the Netherlands in, I would estimate, the 1920s.  They are the pictorial portions of tissues used to wrap oranges.  Although I found their design and their cultural references compelling, I was stymied in making art from them by their size, most not bigger than a couple of postage stamps.  A friend introduced me to the magic of high resolution scans, which enabled the 20x30 scale shown here.

My photographs were taken at night by flashlight in California orange groves.  As one who works with what the lens provides, I was astounded by the possibilities offered by digital manipulation of my negatives.  But then, beginners are easily amazed.
